At Fire Department Coffee, we take pride in honoring and supporting the unsung heroes who selflessly serve their communities day in and day out. Our status as the official coffee of the National Hot Rod Association has given us an opportunity to honor these heroes nationwide throughout the 2023 race season.
In June, we rolled into Norwalk, Ohio, where it was our pleasure to recognize retired Norwalk Fire Chief John Soisson as the latest recipient of the Community Hero Award.
Chief Soisson's remarkable career, spanning over 30 years, has left an indelible impact on the people of Norwalk and Huron County. Since his early days in the fire service, he has been a guiding light for his fellow firefighters. With an unwavering commitment to duty, he has become a beacon of knowledge and inspiration within the department. Through his leadership and expertise, he has set the standard for excellence and instilled a sense of pride in his team.
Chief Soisson's bravery and courage have been demonstrated time and again throughout his career. In 2000, he displayed extraordinary valor by entering a structure engulfed in high heat and heavy fire to rescue two children.
His selfless act earned him the prestigious "Ohio Fire Service Valor Award," the highest honor bestowed upon a firefighter in the state.
Chief Soisson's dedication to serving the community extended beyond his day-to-day firefighting duties. In 1994, he spearheaded a successful fundraising project for a Child's Safety Smokehouse, which has provided invaluable fire safety education to the children of Norwalk and Huron County for over three decades.
Additionally, Chief Soisson initiated the Huron County Smoke Detector program, ensuring that residents have access to free smoke detectors for enhanced safety within their homes.
In 2019, Chief Soisson faced a significant challenge when he suffered a major stroke. However, his resilience and determination mirrored the qualities that defined his career. With strength and grit, he embarked on a miraculous recovery journey that continues to inspire all who know him.
Chief Soisson retired in 2020, leaving behind a lasting legacy of excellence and progress within the Norwalk Fire Department. Through his exceptional leadership, he has elevated the standards of service, leaving the department in a far better condition than he found it. His impact will be felt for generations to come, and his contributions to the safety and well-being of the people of Norwalk and Huron County will never be forgotten.
Fire Department Coffee and the NHRA extend our deepest gratitude to Chief John Soisson for his exceptional service, dedication, and commitment to the communities he has served. His extraordinary career serves as a reminder of the true meaning of heroism and the profound impact one individual can have on a community.
