What is Spirit Infused Coffee?

We can forgive you if you’re not quite sure what Spirit Infused Coffee is all about.

Our goal was simple — create a completely new coffee drinking experience. We know what good coffee tastes like. And we know the distinct qualities we love about the most popular premium spirits. We wanted it all in one incredible cup.

We’re talking about enhancing your coffee with the subtle — and non-alcoholic — notes from a glass of your favorite spirits.

In 2016, Fire Dept. Coffee developed a proprietary way to infuse your cup of coffee with bourbon, tequila, rum, Irish whiskey and many more fine spirits.

It wasn’t easy.

We started this grand experiment by aging the coffee beans in used barrels of high-quality bourbon before roasting. Coffee beans are absorbent and can take on the characteristics of their environment. The idea was promising, but the results were inconsistent.

We tested this process and kept experimenting. We tried different barrels and different spirits. We tried different char levels and different moisture contents. The charred wood created a harsh taste.

We knew that coffee people would scrunch their face. And aficionados of fine spirits would turn up their nose. But we kept at it, kept testing new ideas.

Then we came to our senses and developed a way to directly infuse the coffee beans before roasting. That’s when it happened. We’d created delicious coffee without sacrificing the unique, bold taste of the spirits, and we haven’t looked back since.

Our One-of-a-Kind Process Began with Bourbon Coffee

When we set out to create our first Spirit Infused Coffee, a bourbon coffee, we held ourselves to a high standard. The spirits had to be clearly noticeable, yet not overpowering. It’s a supporting actor, while the coffee remains the star of the show.

Once we arrived at our eureka moment, we were able to replicate it with different spirits with impressive results. Now developing new Spirit Infused Coffee is one of the most enjoyable parts of our coffee roasting experience.

When people heard for the first time that we offered Spirit Infused Coffee in 2016, the initial reaction was usually a raised eyebrow and a little curiosity.

One of those things where people say, “That’s so crazy, it just might work.”

And it did.

The momentum grew more and more as people tried it and shared it with friends. Then they told two friends, and they told two friends, and … You know how it goes.

The process was not easy. It took a lot of time and a lot of effort for us to arrive at a level of proficiency to create a product we were proud to share with all of you.

Like any coffee or spirits expert, once we developed a taste for it, our adventure — and yours — had only begun.

We began experimenting with infusing even more specialized spirits to create new roasts to treat your senses. Now these roasts have become much-anticipated and highly sought-after.

Black Cherry Bourbon Infused Coffee flew off the shelves, and so did Vanilla Bean Bourbon Infused Coffee. Salted Caramel Bourbon Infused Coffee quickly became a favorite.

To feed the thirst for new spirit-infused roasts, we created the Spirit Infused Coffee Club. Now spirit-infused fans can sign up to receive a new specialty roast every month.

These roasts are not available for one-time purchase, so they are a special treat for our club members.
