No firefighter has an easy job.
Every department asks its members to sacrifice and accept risks on behalf of the community it serves. Yet some departments, by necessity, ask a little bit more of their firefighters.
Las Vegas is the perfect example.
“We’re a 24/7 city. We’re the city that never sleeps,” said Fire Inspector Melanie Dennon at Las Vegas Fire & Rescue. “We’re Sin City, and people come here and try to live up to that name. It’s a lot of the same calls of other big cities but we have it all in huge numbers.”
We’ve had the opportunity to get to know Dennon and other members of the Las Vegas team over the last year, and they are true professionals who have our absolute respect and admiration.
That’s why we’re collaborating with them throughout December, and as always, with each purchase of the Fire Dept. Coffee Club we will give back $2 and with each purchase of the Fire Dept. Shirt Club we will give back $5 to benefit sick or injured firefighters in Las Vegas.
One more reason we’ve enjoyed partnering with first responders in Las Vegas is that, despite the rapid pace and extreme calls that they handle, they still bring positive energy to all they do.
They have fun every day, so we have fun with them. You’ll see that when you receive this month’s exclusive, Vegas-themed roast, Burnin’ Love Coffee, and the hip-shaking shirt design that goes with it.
The lights are bright and they shine all day and night.
The casinos are filled with guests and gamblers who come with big dreams and big plans to party to the extreme. It can make for an amazing vacation — or a tragic one.
First responders in Las Vegas and the surrounding areas are the ones always standing by to pick up the pieces.
“When you’re constantly running through a never-ending cycle of responding to emergencies, all of that takes its toll on first responders,” Dennon said. “We compartmentalize because we have to get through the call and function. Then that compartmentalization becomes the norm.”
As a result, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue dedicates significant resources to mental health and resiliency. From an on-staff mental health specialist to chaplains, peer support, and trauma intervention, first responders have 24/7 access to emergency support when they need it.
Yet providing those services takes resources, and your subscriptions to the Fire Dept. Coffee Club and Fire Dept. Shirt Club help make it happen in December.
All funds contributed will go through the Las Vegas Firefighters Benefit Association, which can allocate funds for mental health but also for supporting first responders dealing with on-the-job injuries or illnesses, such as cancer or cardiovascular conditions.
Earlier this year, Dennon faced this harsh reality firsthand when her husband, a fire captain and 21-year veteran, went into cardiac arrest at their home. She administered first aid until paramedics arrived. Together, they saved his life.
As is often the case, firefighters in Las Vegas experience higher rates of cancer and cardiovascular illnesses, so we’re glad to be able to support them in any way we can.
Dennon, a vocal advocate for CPR education among the general public, is using her family’s story as an opportunity to grow awareness and motivate more people to learn CPR.
While firefighting is serious business anywhere — and especially Las Vegas — what we love about the crew at Las Vegas Fire and Rescue is their ability to face each day with a smile and a positive attitude.
That made it easy for us to have fun with this collaboration, and you’ll see it in the packaging for Burnin’ Love Coffee. Every fan of the King knows he was a fan himself of Las Vegas, so we drew inspiration from both in creating this month’s roast and shirt design.
Burnin’ Love is a bold blend that embodies the city’s vibrant spirit. Made with Central and South American beans, it’s the perfect way to kickstart your day — anytime of day.
The design on the coffee bag and the back of this month’s shirt features a guitar-wielding character in firefighter gear performing in front of iconic Las Vegas Strip sights. You can almost feel the electric neon surging off the image.
So join us in celebrating Vegas and the first responders who stand ready to respond at any hour.
December is the perfect time to become a member of the Fire Dept. Coffee Club and the Fire Dept. Shirt Club. Or give a membership as a gift to the stylish, coffee-loving people in your life.
Together, we can make this a great month of giving back for a group of first responders who deserve all the good things we can bring their way!
